Westland-based VFW District 4 Riders group is being honored for dedication to country and community in the VFW #StillServing campaign. The national Veterans of Foreign Wars #StillServing (vfw.org/stillserving) campaign recognizes veterans who continue to serve in their community after the military.
VFW Michigan District 4 Riders, a group of VFW motorcyclists who conduct service projects, are #StillServing by providing stuffed animals to local and state police departments for community programs for the past four years. This year the group donated hundreds of stuffed animals with an estimated in-kind donation of over $3,600 to the Detroit Police Department. The police department gladly accepted the stuffed animals to support local youth community services. Michigan United Way also received stuffed animals needed for its child abuse programs.
On May 5, in honor of the National VFW Day of Service, the group constructed planting beds for local nonprofit Common Word Alliance. The beds will be used to teach local youth how to plant and tend to vegetables throughout the growing season and provide a safe space for kids to gather outside of urban areas.
